About This Project

We built the world’s largest known magnetic shield room using 850,000 pounds of high density concrete and 27,000 pounds of Amumetal. The Neutron Spin Echo Spectrometer Magnetic Shield measures 14′ wide, 12′ high, and 59′ long.

The enclosure reduces the external magnetic field by a factor of 167 times in the critical axial direction, while maintaining a 4 milligauss gradient along the entire axis of the instrument location

After $2.2 million and three years of design, fabrication, installation, and Amuneal Project Management brought this program to completion ahead of schedule with measured performance that exceeded engineering expectations.
